How to beat the burglars in 2017

Recent figures from the Office of National Statistics have revealed that throughout 2016, an astonishing 551,000 people were targeted by burglars during the year. With such staggering results coming to light, this shows just how many people are affected by such crimes in the UK, causing both financial and psychological impact to the homeowners and their families.

Here at PLC Security, we are dedicated to raising awareness on the importance of home security. So with the help of some simple steps from Everest, we have shared the best ways in which to beat the burglars in 2017!

1. Keep it locked!

Secure Lock

According to statistics from the annual Crime Survey for England and Wales, 6% of houses that are targeted by burglars have either very little or no home security in place. When sufficient deadlocks and window bolts are fitted, this drops to just 1%!

Ground floor windows and doors are often looked upon as a treat for thieves, as they can conceal themselves behind hedges and shrubs, so a simple step to deter them from targeting you is to keep all foliage trimmed back.

2. Love thy neighbour

You may be surprised to know that the majority of home burglaries take place during daylight hours, not at night, between the hours of 10am and 3pm. It has also become apparent that the majority of home burglaries are committed by opportunist thieves who live locally, usually within 2 miles of the target home. Some thieves may even study your daily schedule, so make sure, if you’re going away, that you don’t leave any tell-tale signs in view, such as piled-up post or an unkempt garden.

Don’t forget, there’s also the option of using timers on interior lights to make your home look lived in, and remember to cancel/re-direct any deliveries or mail. Also, ask a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your home if you know you will be away for a number of days or weeks.

3. Keep it safe

Safe protecting valuables

Remember not to leave any valuables in view, as this will encourage any opportunists that happen to be in the area. If you know you are going away for a considerable length of time, it’s worth investing in a safe. Store all valuables here, including ones of sentimental value, remembering to bolt this down, as if not you may lose all your valuables along with your safe!

4. Combine security measures

A study from the Royal Statistical Society suggest that your home could be almost 50 times more protected than homes without any property security if you use window locks, indoor lights on a timer, double door locks and external motion sensor lights. Home security is something that you can never have enough of!

5. Sound the alarm!

Alarm system for home or business

According to SafeWise, it takes less than 10 minutes for burglars to ransack a property. With these figures coming to light, it shows just how many of us fail to use our alarm systems. Remember to always set your alarm whenever the house is empty, even if it is just for a short trip.

6. Replace your front door

Forcing open a door that has an old lock is known as ‘lock-bumping’, and many thieves can judge whether they think their attempt will be successful just by looking. By upgrading to a superior strength cylinder, you can help protect your property from a range of attack methods that could save you from a break-in.

Following these easy security steps can help to protect your home and keep your valuables safe – so make home security a priority this year!
